What Should I Do If I Have No Aim Or Passion In My Life?

Written by Melissa Rittenhouse

If you’re referring exclusively to a passion for a career or skill, I have a few thoughts. One, perhaps what you’re passionate about isn’t something that is monetizable. You may be someone who is more passionate about their family, friends and community rather than a specific career or skill. I believe there are a lot of people whose greatest passion in life is their family. However, since it is not a marketable skill we don’t typically think of having a happy family being a dream or passion. I would suggest writing a list of how you spend your free time and what you enjoy doing the most. If you spend most of your free time with family and friends perhaps your passion is building strong relationships.

If that’s not the case, I would still write down how you are spending your time, particularly your free time, for about a week or so. This will help shed some light on what you truly enjoy doing, even if it’s just watching TV. Then I would take inventory of this list and see if you can pinpoint what things you spend your time doing that you dislike and what you like. This will at least give you some perspective on what type of work you should consider based on your general likes and dislikes. For example, if you really hate sitting at a desk all day then you may want to consider transitioning to an occupation where you are on your feet more.

Take note of anything that even mildly interests you and make an effort to spend time doing anything you're naturally curious about. Take action to challenge yourself even if that action is small. You probably aren’t going to develop a passion for something you’ve never tried before so try to do new things as often as you can. Make an effort to learn something new. See if there are any online courses that interest you and sign up for one. I also recommend doing a challenge where you make an effort to spend time doing a specific task you’re interested in a little bit everyday. It’s important for us to challenge ourselves and take action in the direction of something new even if we fail. Last but not least, I would make an effort to socialize more often because you may meet someone who will inspire or introduce you to your passion.
